The inlet that named a suburb

Mosman Bay

Mosman Bay is the deep, sheltered inlet that gave the suburb its name. In the 1830s Archibald Mosman established a whaling station on its shores — the enterprise that would eventually lend its name to the whole district.

As Sydney grew, the bay became a busy ferry hub, its wharves carrying commuters across the harbour to the city and back. Framed by steep, bush-clad slopes and home to the Mosman Rowing Club, the bay has kept its picturesque character through every era.

These restored and colourised photographs capture Mosman Bay across the decades — its ferries, wharves and quiet waters — ready to print and frame.
